That is why a real safety culture is built long before the disaster strikes. It is the invisible backbone that brings every single worker home to their family at the end of a shift.
Planning keeps panic from running the floor. It means your people know where to stand, who to call, and what to shut down. Lives depend on clear actions, not guesswork.
Here are a few tips to assist you with your business continuity plan during a natural disaster:
Identify and Train Safety Wardens: Pick clear-headed workers across every shift. Train them to sweep the floor, account for every person, and quickly guide the crew to safe zones.
Map Primary and Alternate Shelter Areas: Keep routes clear of pallets and debris. Mark internal shelter zones away from exterior walls, high-bay racking, and skylights.
Set Up Communication Backups: Cell towers fail during storms. Keep battery-powered two-way radios and hand-crank emergency broadcast receivers tested and ready.
Build Power Redundancy for Critical Systems: Maintain backup generators for emergency lighting, fire suppression pumps, and data backups. Run load tests every month.
Audit the Action Plan Quarterly: Walk the floor with your crew. Run practical drills. Fix the bottlenecks before real wind and water test them.
