Ergonomics and Musculoskeletal Health | Episode 340
Ergonomics and Musculoskeletal Health
Walk through any warehouse at the end of the shift. You will see people rubbing their lower backs and rolling their tight shoulders. Pain. Fatigue. Slower paces. Your body is the most valuable piece of equipment in the facility. Treat it that way. A real safety mindset is about making sure everyone walks out the door as healthy as they walked in.
Bad lifting habits do not just cause sore muscles. They cause career-ending injuries. It takes months to build a good habit and one wrong twist to tear a disc. We build clear systems, so you work smarter and protect your joints every single day.
Here are a few tips to assist you with Ergonomics & Musculoskeletal Health:
- Work inside your "Power Zone": Keep heavy items between mid-thigh and chest height. Lift with your legs. Keep loads close to your torso. Never twist your spine while holding weight.
- Use anti-fatigue matting: Concrete floors destroy knees and lower backs. Step onto cushioned mats at packing tables to reduce joint pressure. Keep the mat edges flat to prevent trip hazards.
- Call for a team lift: Never tackle bulky, long, or heavy items alone. Size can fool you. Awkward shapes shift fast. Call a partner and communicate before you lift.
- Designate a lift leader: When moving items with a partner, pick one person to call the counts. Clear the travel path first. Walk in sync. Set the load down together on three.
As always, these are potential tips. Please follow the rules and regulations of your specific facility.
Take care of your spine and joints today so you can enjoy your life outside these walls tomorrow.
Great operations run on consistency and mutual respect, so when you see a teammate struggling with an awkward tote, step in and help.
