Episode 4 OSHA’s ITA and New 2024 Regulations
It's Dave here from Mighty Line floor tape, and I'm thrilled to dive into our favorite topic: OSHA record keeping. Today's discussion extends beyond what we covered last week, focusing on the latest updates in OSHA's Injury and Illness Tracking Application (ITA) and how these changes, effective from January 1, 2024, impact your business.
1. Understanding OSHA's ITA and the New 2024 Regulations
OSHA's ITA is a critical tool for certain employers to electronically submit injury and illness data. If you're part of an establishment with 250 or more employees, or in specific high-hazard industries with 20 to 249 employees, you're likely already familiar with this requirement. However, starting in 2024, industries with over 100 employees will also need to report their data electronically via the ITA. This calls for a careful review of the new regulation to ensure compliance.
2. Are You Required to Use the ITA? Here's How to Find Out
Not every employer will need to use the ITA for reporting. OSHA provides an online tool to determine if your firm falls under this requirement. This tool uses the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code applicable to your business, so having this information at hand is essential before you proceed.
3. Alternatives to the ITA: The Role of APIs and Third-Party Systems
For those using third-party systems, there's good news. An Application Programming Interface (API) is permitted as an alternative to the ITA. These systems often offer additional functionalities like generating first reports of injury for workers' compensation purposes.
4. Going Beyond the Basics: Comprehensive Management Systems
Progressive organizations are adopting applications that offer more than just injury and illness tracking. These include incident management, risk assessment, audit management, and even environmental and sustainability tracking. These comprehensive systems can significantly benefit your organization, customers, the public, and the environment.

Ep. 4 Mighty Line Minute: OSHA’s ITA Injury & Illness Tracking System
Hello, everyone. It's Dave at Mighty Line, and Welcome! I'm back again to talk about our favorite subject of OSHA record keeping and why it’s important. Beyond what we talked about last week, we've got some things that are new in their Injury and Illness Tracking Application that OSHA requires for certain employers. Many of you have already been using the “ITA,” or your firms have, but effective January 1st of 2024, there are new regulations that go into effect.
Later I'll cover what the value is in looking beyond OSHA's requirements for using the ITA, and what may be out there that could help your firm even more.
Generally, establishments with 250 or more employees are required to submit injury and illness data electronically using OSHA's ITA. Certain establishments with 20 to 249 employees in specific higher hazard industries are also required.
And effective January 1st of 2024, industries with greater than 100 employees are required to report injury and illness data electronically to OSHA through the ITA. So be careful to review the regulation carefully.
Additionally, certain employers will not be required to report injury and illness data using the ITA. But for that, you should look at the tool that OSHA provides online to determine whether your firm is required to report using the Injury and Illness Tracking Application.
Further, OSHA's tool allows for the use of the “NAICS” code or North American Industry Classification System that is appropriate for your business to use within the tool to determine applicability. It is important to have that information available prior to using.
Employers should be aware that an application programming interface, or “API” is allowable for use in lieu of the ITA when using third party systems. In that case, many of these applications are able to generate first reports of injury for workers’ compensation purposes. I'll talk a little bit more about the benefits of these third party systems in a moment.
Many evolving organizations use applications that go well beyond an injury and illness tracking application. For example, management of change, incident management and investigation, risk assessment, audit management, environmental data, and sustainability programs, whereby information is tracked for all of the above. Many of these broader management systems applications are able to better serve your organization, customers, the public, and the environment.
And finally, in working to improve your management systems throughout your organization, be sure to take a look at Mighty Line's products and how they can improve safety in your workplace. They may include slip-resistant tape, photoluminescent tape, signage for the floor, and help in assisting with means of egress from your facility.
I look forward to seeing you next week. Have a great day.
